Naomi Klein shout out for Obama Cabinet PositionInstitute Fellow Naomi Klein was named as a good candidate for a position in president-elect Barack Obama's administration. Blog post author Lucinda Marshall (of the website Feminist Peace Network) writes, "when confronted by the misogyny of the notion that Larry Summers would be an appropriate choice for Secretary of the Treasury, it feels appropriate to offer the name of Naomi Klein, author of the Shock Doctrine who is one of the few people that seems to understand the dynamics of our economic crisis. While she is a Canadian citizen, there does not appear to be a Constitutional requirement that Cabinet members be U.S. citizens and she would be an excellent choice if the Obama administration is truly interested in transformational change." HBO's New Series Has Character Reading Naomi Klein's The Shock DoctrineNew York magazine recently published a review of HBO's new series, True Blood, about the integration of vampires into human society. Though they've been living among us for centuries, it's thanks to the Japanese invention of synthetic blood (neatly bottled as "Tru Blood") that they can come out of the coffin and live in the open. The first episode features a character, Tara, who's reading The Shock Doctrine, the latest book by Institute Fellow Naomi Klein. From the review: "Sookie’s smart-mouth black best friend and co-worker, Tara (Rutina Wesley)...reads Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine, insults her customers, and takes slavery personally."

Nation Books prominently cited in articlePublishers Weekly recently published an article, Progressive Presses March Forward in which the author cited the publishing imprint of The Nation Institute, Nation Books. "Now a Basic Books imprint, Nation was launched in 2000 to publish nonfiction books on politics, current events and popular culture from a left-wing perspective," the author writes. Despite a number of errors (Larry Beinhart's Salvation Boulevard is not our first fiction title and we are no longer distributed by PGW, though we once were), we will forgive her. She quotes the Nation Books director, Carl Bromley: "We filled the gap that the New York City publishers weren't filling." Amen to that!

Bill Moyers at the National Conference for Media ReformRidenhour Courage Prize winner Bill Moyers (2008) gave an inspirational, motivational speech at the fourth annual National Conference for Media Reform this past weekend, which was shown in full on Democracy Now! An excerpt from his speech: I heard this story a long time ago, growing up in Choctaw County in Oklahoma before we moved to Texas, of the tribal elder who was telling his grandson about the battle the old man was waging within himself. He said, "It is between two wolves, my son. One is an evil wolf: anger, envy, sorrow, greed, self-pity, guilt, resentment, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is the good wolf: joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The boy took this in for a few minutes and then said to his father—to his grandfather, "Which wolf won?" The old Cherokee replied simply, "The one I feed." Democracy is that way. The wolf that wins is the one we feed. And media provides the fodder. Watch or read his speech here.
