The Nation Institute announces the establishment of the Spira Lopez Journalism Internships, for college students or graduates of Latino or Hispanic origin interested in magazine journalism and publishing.

The Spira Lopez Interns will work in conjunction with The Nation Institute Journalism Internship Program administered by The Nation Institute, located in New York City.

Interns apprentice at the weekly Nation magazine, where they learn editorial fact-checking skills, conduct research and evaluate manuscripts, among other editorial tasks. On the publishing side, interns assist the business, advertising, circulation and promotion staff with day-to-day responsibilities.

Interns participate regularly in seminars with visiting journalists, editors, political figures and social activists. Nation and Nation Institute staff members also conduct seminars on editorial skills. The calendar is divided into three four-month semesters, and interns work full time, five days a week.

The Nation Institute is a nonprofit foundation that promotes progressive values and ideas in the mainstream and independent media. In addition to its Internship programs, the Institute publishes books, supports research, promotes public debate, administers journalism fellowships and runs several awards programs that recognize distinctive social contributions. The Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine, is a leading progressive journal of opinion that features reporting and commentary on politics and the arts.

Travel as a Political Act

By Rick Steves

Travel connects people with people. It helps us fit more comfortably and compatibly into a shrinking world. And it inspires creative new solutions to persistent problems facing our nation. We can't understand our world without experiencing it. Travel as a Political Act helps us take that first step. In his new book, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves explains how to travel more thoughtfully—to any destination. He shares a series of field reports from Europe, Central America, Asia and the Middle East to show how his travels have shaped his politics and broadened his perspective. More
