The Nation Institute announces the establishment of the Spira Lopez Journalism Internships, for college students or graduates of Latino or Hispanic origin interested in magazine journalism and publishing.

The Spira Lopez Interns will work in conjunction with The Nation Institute Journalism Internship Program administered by The Nation Institute, located in New York City.

Interns apprentice at the weekly Nation magazine, where they learn editorial fact-checking skills, conduct research and evaluate manuscripts, among other editorial tasks. On the publishing side, interns assist the business, advertising, circulation and promotion staff with day-to-day responsibilities.

Interns participate regularly in seminars with visiting journalists, editors, political figures and social activists. Nation and Nation Institute staff members also conduct seminars on editorial skills. The calendar is divided into three four-month semesters, and interns work full time, five days a week.

The Nation Institute is a nonprofit foundation that promotes progressive values and ideas in the mainstream and independent media. In addition to its Internship programs, the Institute publishes books, supports research, promotes public debate, administers journalism fellowships and runs several awards programs that recognize distinctive social contributions. Working In The Shadows

A Year of Doing the Jobs Americans Won't Do

By Gabriel Thompson

What is it like to do the back-breaking work of immigrants? To find out, Gabriel Thompson spent a year working alongside Latino immigrants who initially thought he was either crazy or an undercover immigration agent. Combining personal narrative with investigative reporting, Thompson shines a bright light on the underside of the American economy, exposing harsh working conditions, union busting and lax government enforcement—while telling the stories of workers, undocumented immigrants and desperate U.S. citizens alike, forced to live with chronic back pain in the pursuit of $8 an hour.
