Lou DuboseFellowLou Dubose edited The Texas Observer from 1987 through 1999. At the Observer, and later as political editor of The Austin Chronicle, he followed the careers of George W. Bush and his political consultant Karl Rove and the collapse of the Democratic Party in Texas. He also reported extensively on the development of the maquiladora belt along the Texas-Mexico border and the ascent of the evangelical right. His first book with Molly Ivins, Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush (Random House, 2000), was a critical examination of the abbreviated business and political careers of the Texas governor, written while Bush was running for the presidency. Shrub was translated into five languages and won the Texas Institute of Letters award for the best non-fiction book in 2000. Their subsequent collaboration, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush’s America, is a series of dateline reports on the results of policy decisions made by the Bush administration. Mr. Dubose also co-wrote with Jan Reid a brief political biography of Karl Rove (Boy Genius, Public Affairs, 2003). With Reid he wrote a second book (The Hammer, Public Affairs, 2004), predicting the collapse and indictment of Republican majority leader Tom DeLay and the incarceration of his lobbying consort Jack Abramoff. He also wrote with Texas Observer editor Jake Bernstein, Vice: Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American Presidency (Random House, 2006). His final collaboration with Molly Ivins, Bill of Wrongs: The Executive Branch's Assault on America's Fundamental Rights (Random House 2007), was published six months after her death in January 2007. His work has appeared in America, The Nation, The Christian Science Monitor, The Progressive, Mother Jones, The Dallas Morning News, the (Toronto) Globe & Mail and other publications. He currently edits the semi-monthly Washington Spectator.
