Eric Alterman

Fellow

A Distinguished Professor of English, Brooklyn College, City University of New York and Professor of Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, Alterman received his B.A. in History and Government from Cornell, his M.A. in International Relations from Yale, and his Ph.D. in U.S. History from Stanford.

He writes a regular column for The Nation magazine, called The Liberal Media and is the Altercation weblogger for Media Matters for America in Washington, D.C., where he is a senior fellow. Alterman has been a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute at The New School in New York since 1985, and is also a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, where he writes and edits the column Think Again. Alterman is a history consultant to HBO Films.

He is the author of seven books, including the national bestsellers What Liberal Media? The Truth About Bias and the News (Basic Books, 2003) and The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)leads America (with Mark Green, Viking, 2004). His Sound & Fury: The Making of the Punditocracy (HarperCollins, 1992) won the 1992 George Orwell Award; his It Ain't No Sin to be Glad You're Alive: The Promise of Bruce Springsteen (Little Brown & Co., 1999) won the 1999 Stephen Crane Literary Award. His other books include Who Speaks for America? Why Democracy Matters in Foreign Policy (Cornell University, 1998) and When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and its Consequences (Viking, 2004).

Called "the most honest and incisive media critic writing today” in the National Catholic Reporter, and author of “the smartest and funniest political journal out there,” in The San Francisco Chronicle, Alterman is frequent lecturer and contributor to numerous publications in the United States and Europe. In recent years, he has also been a columnist for Worth, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, and The Sunday Express (London). He lives in New York City.
