      Student Reading The Nation

There's no better way to beat the winter doldrums than to make summer plans. Lucky for you, we're now accepting applications for our summer internship session!

For thirty-three years The Nation Institute and The Nation magazine have offered an internship program that allows college seniors and recent graduates the opportunity to gain editorial experience at America's oldest weekly magazine.

Here's what former Nation intern and now acclaimed author Ibtisam Barakat had to say about the program:

"[Interning at The Nation was] one of the greatest experiences of intensive learning in my life. The expectation I felt was a deep sense of integrity and human caring that must run in all actions, interactions and writings produced by The Nation. Interns were to experience that hands-on, grasp it and learn what it takes to provide writing and thinking that surpass words by worlds to constitute timely and courageous leadership. And we could walk around in our socks and hold spontaneous gossip sessions by the coffee machine, which was the total opposite of all the rigorous fact-checking we did every day!"

To apply, please send a cover letter, résumé, two letters of recommendation, and two writing samples to:

Some quick tips to make sure your application stands out:

1. Be sure to highlight in your cover letter or résumé the internships, classes, and/or extracurriculars that exhibit your dedication to an issue or issues that you're passionate about. Are you particularly interested in the environment, labor issues, feminism, education, or politics? Let us know!

2. The internship is research heavy, so emphasizing your research experience is helpful.

3. If you are interested in one of our web editorial internships, please indicate any web production or social media experience you have.

4. Make it clear in your cover letter why you want to be at The Nation as opposed to another publication.

Should you have any questions during the application process, feel free to e-mail me at kate@thenation.com.

The application postmark deadline is March 1, so get started!
